Less than the shadow one star would make sliding off my Kindle screen as it collapsed into a puddle of tears over the loss of precious moments spent on it.
Really not amusing
Barely one dimensional characters
And a nauseatingly "happy" ending
Not going to win a literary award but will fly off the bookshelves. Such an easy book to read when you need to escape the entanglements of the world today. A great way to understand bits and pieces of Singapore culture and nuances. It also reminds me that happiness does not come from any goods purchased but in the compassionate humans we bring into our life. That is our most valuable treasure.
Fun and funny!
Hard to put down, as the book weaves between story lines you grow to love the characters. I chuckled, laughed and grew attached to the families. I did not want the book to end!!!
This book was long and very soap opera like with subtle humor. The descriptions of the wealth of the characters was over done. The ending was bad. Very abrupt resolution leaving too many unresolved story lines. It was described as a comedy but it wasn't that funny. Maybe because I am not Asian I just do t get it. I wasted my time reading this. I'm very disappointed with the end.
MAD & AGGRAVATED
I could not put this book down. It was fantastic. I cannot wait to see this made into a movie!!!
skip the gossip mags and read this book during your beach bum days!!! hope there will be a great follow from Kwan.
The literature and quality of writing is awful and the descriptions are too extravagant. I understand that the story is supposed to be extreme but the details are in the way of the story if there even is a story. Although there are glaring mistakes in the book, it is a rather intriguing book. The cultural aspects are on point and the lives are well put together. My largest issue is that I don't really establish a relationship with the characters. I finished the book not really knowing the reasons of all their decisions or sympathizing with them. Overall the book could have been better had the writing been better.
Great summer read, loved the cultural context, reminded me of some of the quirks in my own culture.
I read this book initially with skepticism and boy was I hooked. The characters are over the top, their lavish lifestyles would make any Western millionaire blush. Overall, it is a great fun read.
